May 18, 2010
On June 14, 2010 in Ankara, Turkey the International Water Association (IWA) will sign a formal agreement with the Turkish Ministry of the Environment and Forestry to conduct a three-year Cities of the Future program in three cities in Turkey - Istanbul, Kayseri, and Trabzon. Attending for IWA will be Glen Daigger, Incoming President of IWA; Paul Reiter, Executive Director of IWA, and Steve Moddemeyer, coordinator of the global Cities of the Future program for IWA.
The signing will initiate a significant research and professional Cities of the Future program in Turkey – supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and conducted in association with several Turkish Universities and in association with three leading Turkish cities – Istanbul, Kayseri, and Trabzon. International experts will participate and advise in a series of workshops and symposia in each location to clarify the specific issues for each community and identify integrated solutions for evaluation. The detailed work will be done by the Turkish team.
Overall the program is intended to: (1) learn by doing by developing Cities of the Future plans for these three cities, (2) work on a topical basis linking Turkish academics with international experts to develop a supporting research program (which will be further supported by the Ministry) and (3) write professional guidance on how to develop Cities of the Future in Turkey as a lasting legacy of this project.
