Visiting the USGBC Headquarters, Washington DC

by Lucia Athens

Many of you have probably already seen the gorgeous photos that were published in the Metropolis Magazine article in the June 2009 issue. If not, check it out. Of course, it has a LEED Platinum rating (how could it not?). I had the pleasure of visiting there as part of a Green Building Certification Institute Board of Director’s Meeting, where I serve as a Board member.  The words that come to mind when I think of the aesthetic of the office are “sleek” “cool” and “eco-hip”

The vibe is retro mid-century modern crossed with a bit of high tech laboratory chill.  The entry areas make an immediate impression, with classic Eero Saarinen chairs in bright candy colors. The juxtaposition with a huge logo wall encased in salvaged wood creates a warmer feel. The wood is sweet gum that was recovered from the bottom of a river in Tennessee.  The depth of mud it was buried in determines the color variation. Sweet!

Rick Fedrizzi, USGBC’s CEO, insisted that the two floors they occupy be connected internally with a stairwell. This smart decision, also known as “communicating stairs” makes the space more human and lively. The theater of life is part of whats interesting where people work and play.

One of my favorite things about the offices is their “play” areas. Brightly colored walls separate the kitchen and break area, which also includes a game room! The spaces are so inviting and relaxed in their feel, I wonder if I am in a corporate headquarters or a hip lounge where cocktails should be served.

My other very most favorite things are the educational touches that integrate the message of the council into the space. There are wonderful quotes on the walls like this one…..

And on one wall there is this really cool “tree” that is made up of all the favorite quotes of everyone on the staff.

And of course there are graphics that explain the building itself, all of its features, where the materials came from, and on and on. If you get to DC, check them out and ask for a tour in advance.

One  of the more interesting features is the attempt to integrate biophilic elements into the design, or references to nature. Judith Heerwagen, of Seattle, was their consultant in this area. There are panels with nature images imprinted onto the glass, a water wall, and herb plants in the dining area where you can snip basil for your lunch!
