City of Kennewick Downtown Revitalization Strategy, Kennewick WA

In collaboration with Urban Design Studio, the project manager, Tom Hudson directed this community-based planning process. His team's primary role was to provide economic analysis, insights and sensitivity in all proposed development actions.

Downtown Kennewick’s challenges include a major railroad line along one edge, outdated pedestrian amenities, a currently awkward mix of businesses, high vacancy rates, and no strong business niche to draw people to the center.

Broad community and civic participation already has led to three redevelopment projects even before the plan was completed. The plan was adopted by City Council four days after its completion.

Since then, funding for new staff, a central park, streetscape improvements, pedestrian amenities and other major improvements has been acquired; projects are under construction. Major organizational recommendations also have been implemented.
